The Day I Quit Baking...Almost

My not so baby sister is a rebel. Emo child if you will, you know, she only smiles when no one's looking, wears mostly black, replies 'I guess' to just about every question, and shrugs at every other question. She's not easily impressed, nor is she excitable and her palette still favors 'kid food.'

For her 16th birthday, I wanted to deliver her out of funfetti and forever secure my position as favorite sister by impressing her with my ninja decorating skillz. What ensued during the next four hours can only be described as...a massacre. I forgot the vinegar in the red velvet cake, didn't grease up my bowls enough for the marshmallow fondant, and had about four rounds of dishes in between sets.

By hour three, I swore off cake decorating and lamented the orders of tools and cutouts that were yet to be shipped from Amazon...le sigh. Really, cupcakes are just the way to go, small, easy, simple. Who doesn't love a cute cupcake?

And when the last bit of pearl dust was brushed onto this cake, that all changed.

Here are the recipes I followed (revised):
